Salt Dough Cookies

Butter is expensive!  And you need butter to make sugar cookies.  I don't know about you, but I HATE to waste food. 

Sometimes I have decorated cookies that looked so bad that I wouldn't even feed them to the dog.  And we don't even have a dog!  Not to mention the fact that in order to develop your skill in working with royal icing, you have to decorate a LOT of cookies and whose waistline needs them sitting around?

So.  If you want (need?) to practice your decorating skills, make some salt dough!  As you can see, it looks just like a cookie.  Nobody will be the wiser.  It's like a cake dummy, only smarter.


1 cup salt
2 cups flour
1 cup water
Measure out flour and salt and stir together.  Add water, stir together some more, then turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead for a few minutes.

Roll and cut out just like cookies, but BAKE at 250 degrees to cure them.  It takes about 30 minutes or so for them to get hard.
